The reason why she is the subject of the film is never highlighted and most people would never even know that the story comes from her own words. Firstly, and probably most importantly, The Miracle Worker doesn’t credit the inspiration for the film (and its play) to Keller’s autobiography at all.

However, as with many other biopics The Miracle Worker doesn’t dig deeply enough into its subject and there are some inaccuracies in the story it does tell. So, although the whole of Helen Keller’s life story wasn’t really told, the story of acceptance, understanding and love is worthy of its Oscar success. Also, the story of maternal love not only from a biological position, but from that of a person caring deeply for another person’s well being resonated with audiences. Based on the stage play of the same name, Bancroft and Duke reprised their roles and their chemistry translated well from stage to screen. Both Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively for their roles and it has become a beloved Oscar classic over the years. The Miracle Worker is the Oscar winning film and true story of Helen Keller’s early life. Annie’s teaching’s gradually helped Helen to understand the world better However, Annie soon discovered that Helen was going to be quite a challenge, although not as challenging as Helen’s parents who felt that the sudden change in the family dynamic may cause more harm than good. Upon hearing about the Perkins Institute, Mr and Mrs Keller sent for someone right away and soon Annie Sullivan ( Anne Bancroft) arrived, eager to get started and get to know Helen. However, as she grew older her parents decided that the time was right to get some help to deal with Helen and perhaps help her to have a better life. At first distraught and traumatised by their daughter’s disability, Kate ( Inga Swenson) and James Keller ( Andrew Prime) felt at a loss as what to do with Helen. You could even just do your own thing, not caring about what the world thinks of you and just carrying on at your own pace because it’s the only thing you’ve ever known.Ī mystery virus caused Helen Keller ( Patty Duke) to become blind and deaf at a young age. You may also view the world in a negative way, seeing the world as a mess of overloaded information where people have so many differing opinions that it makes it difficult to have an opinion of your own. What do you consider normal that others might not? Are there things that you do in your everyday life that you think are perfectly fine, only to be told differently when you do them in front of a friend? Do you see the world in a way that others may not? You may think about how people interact with each other, always seeing the good in people and the best intentions that people have towards each other.
